If you are missing one or more teeth between other teeth, a ceramic dental bridge is an excellent alternative to removable partial dentures or dental implants. By attaching natural-looking artificial teeth between two dental crowns on the adjacent teeth, we can give your smile a wonderful improvement that is both functional and aesthetic.
Unlike dentures, bridges are not prone to slippage. They stay in place like implants but are less invasive. A bridge is a permanent prosthesis, attached to existing teeth. A partial denture is an artificial replacement of teeth and gums that is held in place by metal clasps that fit onto remaining natural teeth.
Dental implants require a series of procedures to recreate a missing tooth or teeth. A titanium implant is put in the empty tooth pocket, called the alveolus, where the natural tooth’s root was. Over time, titanium forms a bond with surrounding bone similar to the bond a tooth has with the bone of the jaw. The exposed part of the implant is covered with a crown. A dental bridge requires no implantation in the jaw.
Gaps left by missing teeth are not merely a cosmetic issue. Remaining teeth will rotate or shift into the gap, resulting in problems with the overall alignment of the teeth, called the bite. The imbalance can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Gaps left by missing teeth can also contribute to the development of gum disease. Getting a dental bridge can not only give you the confidence of regaining your beautiful smile, it can also protect your mouth and body from infection and unnecessary pain.
A dental bridge can last a lifetime but, like your natural teeth, requires good oral hygiene.
At Watertown Dentistry we will develop a treatment plan that best fits all your dental needs. Remember, we will always take the time to answer your questions and explain all procedures before and throughout your visits.
